چکیده

A Monte Carlo technique for modeling background in space-based gamma-ray telescopes has been developed. The major background components included in this modeling technique are the diffuse cosmic gamma-ray flux, the Earth's atmospheric flux, the decay of nuclei produced by spallation of cosmic rays, trapped protons and their secondaries, the decay of nuclei produced by neutron capture, and the de-excitation of excited states produced by inelastic scattering of neutrons. The method for calculating the nuclear activation and decay component of the background combines the low Earth orbit proton and neutron spectra, the spallation cross sections from Alice91, nuclear decay data from the National Nuclear Data Center's (NNDC) Evaluated Nuclear Structure Data File (ENSDF) database, and three-dimensional gamma-ray and beta transport with Electron Gamma-ray Shower version 4 (EGS4). This Monte Carlo code handles the following decay types: electron capture, β β, meta-stable isotopes and short lived intermediate states, and isotopes that have branchings to both β and β. Actual background from the HEAO 3 space instrument is used to validate the code.

The Spectrum of Diffuse Cosmic Hard X-Rays Measured with HEAO–1

The spectrum of the diffuse isotropic component of cosmic X-rays over the 13–180 keV range was determined by the UCSD/MIT Hard X-Ray and GammaRay instrument (HEAO A4) on the High Energy Astronomical Observatory–1 (HEAO–1). The instrument consists of a complex of actively shielded and collimated scintillation counters, including the Low Energy Detector set from which the data reported here were ...

We use Swift/BAT Earth occultation data at different geomagnetic latitudes to derive a sensitive measurement of the Cosmic X-ray background (CXB) and of the Earth albedo emission in the 15–200 keV band. We compare our CXB spectrum with recent (INTEGRAL, BeppoSAX) and past results (HEAO-1) and find good agreement. Using an independent measurement of the CXB spectrum we are able to confirm our re...

The X-ray background and the evolution of AGN

We discuss the constraints on the AGN evolution from the cosmic X–ray background and source counts. A synthesis model to fit the X–ray background is presented. The data used are a compilation from Gruber (1992), mainly based on HEAO-1 data. The spectrum of type 2 AGN has been modeled including Compton down– scattering within the absorbing material. We found an improvement when a dependence on r...

Spectrum of Cosmic X-ray Background Observed by Rxte/pca

We have anaylzed a large set of RXTE/PCA scanning and slewing observations performed between April 1996 and March 1999. We obtained the 3-20 keV spectrum of the cosmic X-ray background (CXB) by subtracting Earth-occulted observations from observations of the X-ray sky at high galactic latitude and far away from sources. The sky coverage is approximately ∼ 22.6 · 10 3 deg 2. The PCA spectrum of ...
